The 1966 Trumpy 55 is a quintessential example of classic yacht design, celebrated for its timeless elegance and exceptional craftsmanship. Renowned in the yachting community, Trumpy yachts are often regarded as the epitome of luxury and style, with the 55 model being particularly admired for its historical significance. This vessel boasts a spacious and luxurious interior layout, offering three cabins and three heads, making it perfect for comfortable coastal cruising with family and friends. The Trumpy 55 is powered by diesel engines, providing a cruise speed of 10 knots and a maximum speed of 14 knots, ideal for leisurely voyages. With a fuel capacity of 400 gallons, it offers a decent range for extended trips. However, prospective buyers should be aware that the wooden hull requires significant maintenance to prevent rot and water damage, and the older electrical systems may need updating. This yacht is perfect for enthusiasts of classic vessels who appreciate the historical significance and craftsmanship of Trumpy boats. While it may lack the speed and modern amenities of contemporary yachts, its classic design and luxurious interior make it a standout choice for those seeking a unique and elegant cruising experience.
1966 Trumpy 55 "Windrush", one of the last Trumpys built, will be available approximately June 1. This elegant vessel is in the water and waiting for some final items to be delivered. The Trumpy shipbuilding legacy began five generations ago in the coastal city of Burgen, Norway, where Casper Trumpy owned a shipyard. Casper’s son, John, grew up working in the family shipyard and obtained a degree in naval architecture in Berlin, Germany. Upon the death of Casper, John moved to America. John Trumpy, Sr.’s intuitive designs answered the demands of an increasingly wealthy class of Americans. The American yacht market favored fast commuter yachts. Trumpy’s narrow beam and shallow draft design favored speed with no great sacrifice to posh interiors. John Trumpy built yachts from the 1920s to 1970. Initially in Philadelphia and then moving to Annapolis, Maryland where they built boats under the name John Trumpy and Sons. Trumpy yachts were known for their high-end craftsmanship. Their sterling reputation had much to do with the high quality of materials, meticulous craftsmanship and the best construction methods of the time. Built primarily from wood, these yachts feature sleek profiles, white hulls and a classic, traditional aesthetic. During post-World War II years Trumpy yachts between 55 and 80 feet became exceedingly popular with many well-known, well to do Americans. Notable yachts and owners included the presidential yacht USS Sequoia which was the official presidential yacht from the 1930s to 1977. Other notable owners were E.F. Hutton, Howard Hughes, members of the Chrysler, DuPont and Drexel families. The Windrush was built in the finest of Trumpy traditions, with an oak keel and oak frames, mahogany hull, painted gleaming white (Awlgrip) with varnished mahogany and teak accents, sporting on the bow the traditional gold Trumpy scrolls. Her flush deck design provides excellent visibility while she glides effortlessly through the water.
The 1966 Trumpy 55 is a testament to the golden era of yacht craftsmanship, offering a blend of elegance and luxury that is hard to find in modern vessels. Known for their exceptional build quality, Trumpy yachts feature exquisite woodwork and attention to detail. The spacious layout with three cabins and heads makes it ideal for family cruising or entertaining guests. However, the wooden construction demands significant upkeep, and potential buyers should be prepared for regular maintenance to prevent issues like wood rot. While it offers a smooth ride in calm to moderate conditions, it may not perform as well in rough seas compared to modern fiberglass yachts. This vessel is best suited for classic yacht enthusiasts who value historical significance and are willing to invest in its preservation. For those seeking modern speed and amenities, alternatives like the Hatteras 53 Classic or Grand Banks 55 might be more suitable.
Owners appreciate the Trumpy 55 for its classic design and craftsmanship, though maintenance demands are high.
