Hallberg-Rassy has a proud tradition of building top-quality long-distance and bluewater yachts that can take their owners almost anywhere the oceans can reach. Almost 9,000 Hallberg-Rassy hulls have been built to date. They can be found around the world, all coming from the Swedish west coast archipelago where they have been built since 1943.
The Hallberg-Rassy 42E was built 1980-1991 with about 255 launched. Each hull was built according to Lloyd's specifications. “Octubre” is hull 45 and is a ketch, ideally suited for true bluewater exploits, yet a very capable coastal cruiser for the Great Lakes and North American coastal waters. Many of this model have sailed around the globe. She has been in freshwater for much of her life.
The hull is made of solid fibreglass (GRP) ensuring strong and lasting construction. The deck utilises sandwich construction to enhance insulation and minimise condensation within. The Burma teak decking is visually appealing as is the mahogany interior.
The HR 42E has a long fin keel with encapsulated iron ballast and a skeg-hung rudder, providing excellent stability and handling. She has a proven Volvo diesel that can cruise at 7-8 knots and is equipped with a powerful SidePower bow thruster, making manoeuvring in tight marinas and situations easy.
The 42E is capable of handling all weather and seas, the center cockpit layout provides a high freeboard with a clean flush deck including ample storage on deck and below. The center cockpit comes with a hard dodger and overhead cabin top with a fixed windshield for full protection. The ketch sail plan provides options for speed and safety in all condition with good performance under sail.
Below deck you find a beautiful mahogany interior with a walkthrough from stem to stern, with both a forward master cabin and full head with shower, as well as an aft cabin with ensuite head. The spacious salon includes ample seating and a large table with two folding leaves. In the galley is a 3-burner propane stove with oven as well as 12-volt refrigeration.
Octubre has had many updates over the last 10 years:
2016 All running rigging, sheets, blocks, mooring lines
2017 Rewired, new AC and DC panels, Xantrex inverter
2018 Raymarine Axiom 7 chartplotter, i70 displays, i70S autopilot controller
2019 new opening ports (10)
2020 bow thruster, solar and solar controller; diesel high pressure pump, fuel injector service
2021 Masts required, new LED mast and deck lights; deck refinished and re-caulked
2025 2 new composting toilets
A 2025 survey is available.
This vessel was used as a liveaboard for 3 years and has been on the hard for 2. Although structurally sound, and operating well mechanically, the interior needs cosmetic work. This work includes new cushions, mattresses and upholstery, as well as refinishing of some of the interior including the salon ceiling headliner. The deck could use a light sand and teak oil. Most of the required work is labour.
Once complete, the vessel will be competitive with those currently selling for $190k, $200k, or more. This is a steal for the right buyer.
