Willow – 2005 Cabo Rico Pilot House



S/V Willow is a rare 42 pilothouse Cabo Rico boasting a Yanmar 56 hp main engine, Westerbeke 5.5 KW genset, Vetus bow thruster, powerful double head rig furling head sail, Scheafer boom furling, and world class construction. It features a centerline master forward with an ensuite head and large stall shower. There is also an over/under cabin to port and an aft double to starboard. YES that's three cabins in a 42' boat! The pilothouse has a full inner helm that provides great 360 degree visibility. Hidden under the raised seating is a very functional work room with vice mounted along with an additional freezer and plenty of storage for spare parts! This vessel has an equipment list too long to mention here and has been very well maintained by a knowledgeable owner. This is a very capable world cruising vessel with great sailing performance, not to be confused as a motorsailor. This Cabo Rico 42 should be at the top of the list for anyone seeking this class of vessel.

Rig: East Coast Rigging on delivery 11/2021 – Total $55,995

• All standing and running rigging removed and replaced, including but not limited to: 1 X 19 SS, Sta-Loc fittings, turnbuckles, spreader ends, remove and replace isolating all mast fittings and fasteners, halyard exit plates, new steps at masthead, 316 SS lifeline, added 316 aft safety bars, new Harken Ocean MKIV 2 genoa roller furling, new Harken Ocean MKIV 1 staysail / storm jib roller furling, lead blocks, running rigging.
• Engineered and installed custom mast foot bearing plate machined from aluminum billet, custom masthead extension for spinnaker, Code Zero, etc.
• Replaced and secured all in-mast wiring and antenna leads, Shakespeare VHF/AIS antenna and spare high gain, Davis wind indicator, Garmin gWind wired transducer.
• Replaced all navigation lights with Lopolight lights: Running, Masthead sailing with strobe, Steaming. Replaced Foredeck light and Spreader lights.
• Replaced Schaffer Gamma Boom main sail articulating mast track and all components, serviced boom.

Rigging Additional:

• Standing Rigging re-tuned and survey: 4/2024 by Nance Underwood after 3,800-mile shake down.
• Spinlock XTS rope clutch and cleats - Replaced several mast-mounted ones 4/2024
• Spinnaker pole: Replaced Forespar 13-30 aluminum 4/2024.
• Installed new laser-welded American aircraft-grade 316 SS stem fitting for dolphin striker 4/2023.
• Genoa Carts: Added new Harken 32mm High-Load Pinstop Cars HGT326S. 
• Mainsheet traveler replaced with 32mm High-Load Mainsheet Traveler Car and control ends. Added various Harken Big Boat 75mm Blocks and added 2.3-ton Snatch Blocks for preventers. 
• Lewmar Ocean 40 winch: Added at starboard side cockpit, 4/2024. Rebuilt all winches, complete spare part kits, continual service.
• EWincher 2 battery-powered winch handle. $2177

Lines: All running rigging replaced 2021, new spares, control lines, furling lines, soft shackles, and dock lines as needed.  4 X 130’ 3-braid hurricane / Panama Canal lines, in addition to 300’ ¾” drogue line and 350’ 3/8” 19,000 ABS Amsteel Blue retrieval line.

Inflatable Fenders: Taylor Made Super Duty 18” X 29” Super Yacht Inflatable Fenders.

Compressor and Hookah: California Air Tools Ultra-Quiet Oil-Free Air Compressor, Horizontal, 2.0 HP, 4.6-Galllon Twin Air Tanks with 100’ hookah set-up, inflator tips for fenders.

Deck Hatches: 8/2022 Replaced all Bomar deck hatches with SS Bomar Hatches, except small one over the head and companionway sliding hatch. $4,200

Ground Tackle:

• 77 # S160 model galvanized spade anchor, 2021.
• 400' Domestic ACCO 3/8” G43 galvanized chain, 5,400lb SWL, Titan 5720 SWL anchor shackle, new chain wheel for Muir Cheetah HR2500 electric windlass, 2022.
• Imtra watertight dual solenoid controller behind chain shield, 4/2024. Stocked new spare, R&R foot-switch cabling, new hand controller, painted anchor locker. 
• Twin anchor snubber lines with Chafe-Pro guards, also for multiple dock lines, anchor ball, 2022 – 2024.
• Fortress Stern Anchor / Kedge on 30’ chain and 3-strand rode, Existing.

External Fittings and Fasteners: Replaced all deck hatch, deck fittings, and locker 18-8 (304) fasteners with 316 SS. Replaced most hinges and deck wash fittings.

Rub Strake: Dented SS replaced with custom machined Dolphin Grey HDPE and replaced fasteners with 316 SS.

Dorades: New SS, 316 SS rings and winch handle closing plates 4/2024.

“Granny Bars" removed, but retained.

Bottom Paint: Sanded to fiberglass, Petit barrier coat, 3 coats Odessey Triton ablative bottom paint 2022, fresh coats 2023, 2024, 2025

Propeller: New ZF fixed pitch propeller with Propspeed 9/2024, stern tube inspected, shaft alignment verified. New hull and thruster zincs as required. $3,800

Hoses: 2021 / 2022 / 2023 replaced through-hull hoses as required by survey and inspection.

Bimini Spray / Sun Shields: Replaced with Solar Bimini with removable dodger, slide-in sun and spray side curtains, all clear is 40ml Strata Glass, Sunbrella cockpit steering station cover. Retained original bimini. 

Pilothouse Windows: New Soltis 86-2051 sun and opaque block out covers for 2023-24, frames painted, wipers removed.

Stern Ladder: Replaced wood steps with no-maintenance Dove Grey HDPE.

Bow Thruster: Vetus solenoid, 8/2024, added spare and prop shear pins.

Interior Lights / 12v Fans: Replaced most interior lights with LED and replaced most fans, spares.

Head: Rebuilt 2024 Vacuflush head and pump unit, complete spares kit.

Document Safe: Replaced battery and code, 2024

• Replaced forward AC with Mabru 7K BTU, customized stainless condensate pan with drains on all 4 sides for cooling on any tack, added March Pump, quick-bleed hose, 4/2022.

• A&R Marine Diesel at purchase, 2021: exhaust elbow, cleaned heat exchanger and replaced ends. Changed impeller.
• SunPower Marine authorized Yanmar service work, 2023: New water pump and spare, new motor mounts, main and several seals, new hoses and piping, valve adjustment, check compression, added a new starter to spares. Exhaust elbow, replaced clutch and KM35A-2 transmission with new, align shaft.
• Alternator: Balmar XT1700 with serpentine belt, anodized aluminum pully and guides, wiring harness to W5500 programable regulator, spare belt.
• Generator: A&R Marine Diesel on purchase at 1620 hours. Rebuilt heat exchanger, replacing ends, clean core. Replaced fuel boost pump, 2023, spare added to inventory.  Spare water pump kit, hoses, gaskets, O-rings, belt, heat exchanger end caps, zincs, etc. 2/2024. Current generator hours: 2039.

Bronze through-hull water strainers: Perko and Groco, rebuilt 2023, stripped to bronze, replaced glass, lids, seals, reoriented as necessary for easier service. Serviced Marlon through-hulls.

Portlight seals: replaced all New Found Metal seals with 316 SS screens. 

Outboard and dingy: New 11/2021 Yamaha 4-stroke 2.5 outboard, now with 4 hours. $1,145

Used Zodiac 310 dinghy with air floor.

Sails: All Sail Technologies sails purchased by the H2O-era owner in 2014. All inspected by Mac Sails in 2022, in excellent shape. Mac Sails converted an earlier period hank-on staysail for roller furling. Genoa sun covers replaced with Sunbrella; also added sun cover to the now furling staysail.

Willow sailed with:

• Sail Technologies Mainsail constructed with Contender Bluewater low-aspect crosscut woven cloth for in-boom furling, tightening leech as reefed, eliminating need for vang adjustment.
• Sail Technologies Roller Furling 130% 659 sq. ft. Genoa constructed with Contender low-aspect cloth. 
• The Sail Technologies Tech3 tri-radial Radial RF Contender Radial Genoa, an unused hank on storm jib and storm main trysail were unused on Willow.
